October 16, 2010

SUNGAI PETANI, Oct 16 – The Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degree programme offered by AIMST University has received recognition from the World Health Organisation (WHO) which monitored the programme over the past three years.

Its chancellor, Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu, said the university received the recognition letter on Thursday, which stated that AIMST University was now listed as one of WHO’s recognised universities.

He said the recognition would also enable the university’s MBBS graduates to pursue studies overseas at a higher level.

“This university will also conduct more research to create new opportunities and improve its level of education.

“We will also appoint more experienced lecturers because AIMST University has so far, been accepted as a university for all in Kedah,” he told reporters after attending the university’s third convocation here today.

Samy Vellu said the university would also offer four post-graduate programmes, namely Masters of Science (MSc) in Anatomy, MSc Physiology, Msc Biochemistry and Master of Business Administration (MBA) in Healthcare Management in the near future.

He said the programmes would be introduced with the aim of producing more young lecturers in the fields to fulfill the needs of local universities.

Samy Vellu said for MBA in Healthcare Management, focus would be given to lure individuals from the health sector, especially those serving in hospitals and pharmacies, to improve themselves to become administrator.

Besides, he said, the university was also in the midst of getting approval to implement a degree course in nursing and physiotherapy.

To date, AIMST University has produced over 1,000 graduates in various fields, especially medicine, and currently has over 2,000 local and foreign tudents, including those from Vietnam, Somalia and Nigeria. – Bernama
